Influence of Surface and Implant Design on the Stability of Five Commercial Titanium Implants. A biomechanical study in the rabbit.

At the 25th Anniversary Meeting of the Academy of Osseointegration, Dr. Jan Gottlow presented impressive results of an animal study that compared the implant stability of hydrophilic Straumann SLActive® implants and four competitor implant surfaces, all with non-hydrophilic surfaces. This study was performed in 40 rabbits and utilized removal torque measurement to assess implant stability.  Measurements were taken at 3 and 6 weeks (120 implants per timepoint).  The following five implant systems were included in the study:

  • Straumann® SLActive®
  • AstraTech™ OsseoSpeed™
  • Zimmer® Tapered Screw Vent®
  • Implant Direct® ScrewPlant®
  • Osstem™ GS II Fixture

Results showed significant differences between the mean removal torque values of SLActive and the selected competitors’ implants at 3 and 6 weeks.  The SLActive implants showed significantly higher implant stability compared to the implants with non-hydrophilic surfaces as assessed by removal torque evaluation.
